To run the Viewer, your system must meet the following minimum requirements:
Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000 or NT 4.0
Pentium 133 MHz processor (Pentium 200MHz recommended).
24MB of RAM (32MB recommended).
25MB of free disk space.
Web browser:
Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.0 or higher (excluding 6.0 and 6.01).

Can I install the Form Viewer as a regular user?
You must on to Windows using the correct profile before you can install the Form Viewer:
Windows 95/98/ME - The Form Viewer can be installed under any user profile.
Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP or similar mult-user workstation - The Form Viewer must be installed under an administrator profile.
Do I need to license and register the Form Viewer?
Licensing or registering the Form Viewer application is not necessary for the Air Force community because electronic forms are individually licensed and registered.
The Form Viewer application will not open unlicensed electronic forms. If you are prompted for license and key information while using the Form Viewer, you are attempting to open an unlicensed electronic form. Contact the e-Publishing Service Desk if you find an unlicensed electronic form on the e-Publishing web site.
Are Internet Explorer and Netscape configured to work with the Form Viewer during installation?
During installation of the Form Viewer, the installer automatically installs the files needed to function properly with the browser on the workstation. If the installer cannot locate the browser, you must to copy the files manually for your browser as follows:
Early Versions of IE (4.x): The Form Viewer operates as a plugin under early versions of IE. This requires that the file npmfv.dll is installed in the browser's Plugins directory.
The plugin file is always installed with the Viewer and located at:
\Plugins\npmfv.dll
Depending on your version of IE, the plugin directory is located at either:
a) \Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins\
b) \Program Files\Plus!\Plugins\
Later Versions of IE (5.0+): The Form Viewer operates as an ActiveX Document Server under later versions of IE, which requires registering the file ViewerOutlet.dll with your Windows system.
You will have to register the dll manually if the installer does not detect your browser by:
From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type command and press Enter.
At the command prompt, type:
c:\\\regsvr32
"c:\Program Files\PureEdge\Viewer 5.0\ActiveX\ViewerOutlet.dll"
and press Enter.
Netscape (4.0 and later, excluding 6.0 and 6.01): The Form Viewer operates as a plugin under Netscape, which requires installation of the file npmfv.dll in the correct browser directory:
The Plugins directory for versions before 6.0 is:
\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins\
The Components directory for version 6.1 and later is
\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\Components\
You will have to copy the file manually if the installer cannot locate your browser. The plugin file is always installed with the Viewer and located at:
\Plugins\npmfv.dll
You can copy it from this folder to the correct Netscape folder.
Netscape version 6.1 or later: You will also have to register the plugin with Windows by:
From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type command and press Enter.
At the command prompt, type:
c:\\regxpcom
"c:\\Components\npmfv.dll"
and press Enter.
In order to minimize installation and setup problems, uninstalling and reinstalling the Form Viewer is recommended if one of the following occur:
Installation of IE 4.x after installation of the Form Viewer
Installation of IE or an upgrade to IE version 5.0 or later after installation of the Form Viewer
Upgrade from an earlier version of Netscape to version 6.1 or later
Why am I having problems re-installing the Form Viewer?
The following situations cause problems when reinstalling the Form Viewer:
If Form Viewer 5.1.0 was uninstalled and then reinstalled to a different location, the other user accounts on that computer will not recognize the new location. It is recommended that you reinstall the Form Viewer to the same location because of this issue.
If a different location must be used, you will have to in under each user profile and start the Form Viewer either from the Start menu or by double clicking the Form Viewer executable. This will reset the proper registry entries so that the current user profile will recognize the new location of the Form Viewer.
After upgrading a workstation's operating system or failing to uninstall the Form Viewer through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, you receive the following error when trying to reinstall the Form Viewer:
"You have a previous version of the ICS Viewer 5.1 installed on your computer. You must uninstall this previous version before installing a new one".
This error occurs because the directory:
Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{E0000510-0510-0510-0510-000000000510} or Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{E0000600-0600-0600-0600-000000000600}
exists on the workstation. You must locate and delete this directory in order to reinstall the Form Viewer.
Why do I receive the error "unable to edit (or update) user profile information" when I open the Form Viewer?
A definitive solution to this error has not been determined at this time. To isolate the source of the error, try this workaround first:
During installtion, the application creates a PureEdge subdirectory under the Application Data directory to the profile for the first user thats in. The administrator must move the PureEdge subdirectory from the "Administrator" profile (or from the profile the directory was created under) to the "Everyone" or "All Users" profile.
If this workaround does not resolve the problem, the error is most likely occurring because of one or more of a set of registry keys in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes" cannot be created. In a standard Windows 2000 install, this key is available to all users with regular User, Power User, or Administrator privileges. In some instances, domain group policies have been enforced that remove this privilege, causing the error dialog to appear when running the Form Viewer. Note that domain group policies pertaining to the registry are enforced even for local users created on the machine, not just for domain users.
The solution to this problem is to grant access to the keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER back to the user. Privileges for this section of the registry appear to be derived from the "HKEY_USERS\xx" key, where "xx" refers to the currentlyged in user (there is one sub-key for each user that hasged on to the machine). Therefore, access needs to be granted to the "HKEY_USERS" sub-key for each user on a user-by-user basis.
It is possible that a Windows script running at login contains a command that locks down the user section of the registry. In order to isolate the problem from the Form Viewer, a small application was written that tries to create registry keys under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes". This application can be used to test machines to see if the appropriate registry permissions exist. Contact the e-Publishing Service Desk to obtain this utility.
The utility, gpresult.exe, is available as a free download from the Microsoft web site, which provides domain policy information on the machine that it is run on. One of the items of information this utility provides is a list of domain policies that affect registry permissions. This may help some administrators find the domain policy that is preventing access.
Why do I receive error messages when I try to run the Form Viewer after installing it on a Windows 2000 server running Terminal Services?
At this time, the Form Viewer is not supported under Terminal Services but the following workaround may enable the Form Viewer to work in some environments. The PureEdgeAPI.ini file must exist each user profile's \windows directory. Under Windows Terminal Services, it appears that the PureEdgeAPI.ini file is occasionally removed and needs to be replaced. One way to ensure that the PureEdgeAPI.ini file exists is to specify that the file gets copied to the user's \windows directory each time they in by adding the command to the login script. Please note, this is not a confirmed solution for running the Form Viewer under Terminal Services.
Why do I receive an Adobe Acrobat error when I attempt to open an electronic form by double-clicking on the file?
Adobe recently began shipping Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6.0, which uses the .XFD file extension used with electronic forms. As a result, customers who are using the Form Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6.0 may notice the following problems:
Windows 98 and Windows ME: If Adobe Acrobat 6.0 was installed after the Form Viewer, opening an electronic form by double-clicking on the document may result in an error as Adobe Acrobat will try to display a format it does not support.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP: If Adobe Acrobat 6.0 was installed after the Form Viewer and the user has previously run the Form Viewer, the user will be able to continue using the Viewer. In this case, users will not be able to launch Adobe Acrobat by double-clicking on an Adobe .XFD file. Users that have not alreadyged in and run the Form Viewer may receive an error from Adobe Acrobat when double-clicking an electronic form.
In both environments: If the Form Viewer was installed after Adobe Acrobat 6.0, the Form Viewer will re-register the .XFD file extension. This will result in full functionality of the Form Viewer, however double-clicking on an Adobe .XFD file will result in the Form Viewer displaying an error message.
PureEdge is working with Adobe to assess the situation and provide a solution to their customers. We will provide updates on this issue as information becomes available.
Why does the following error message appear every time I open the Form Viewer:
"An application error has occurred and an application error is being generated ...regxpcom.exe"?
If you are using Netscape 6.1 (or higher) as your default browser, you may get this error message upon opening the Form Viewer. The regxpcom.exe error message appears when you open the Form Viewer because there is a "bug" in the Netscape browser. It is a "harmless" error message, in that it will not affect the Form Viewer capabilities.
If you are not running Netscape 6.1, contact the e-Publishing Service Desk.
Why doesn't the electronic form open in the browser window or why am I prompted to save when I click on the link for an electronic form?
This problem will occur if your browser was not detected during installation of the Form Viewer. The solution to this issue is explain under "Are Internet Explorer and Netscape configured to work with the Form Viewer during installation?".
This error also occurs if the website from which you are opening the electronic form does not have a MIME Type Map for the xfd extension. This setting is added to the properties of the website as follows:
Right Click on Website Name in IIS and select Properties
Select the HTTP Headers Tab
Under MIME TYPE MAP, select the FILE TYPES button
Select NEW TYPE button
In ASSOCIATED EXTENSION, enter .xfd
In CONTENT TYPE, enter application/vnd.xfdl
Select OK
Select NEW TYPE button again
In ASSOCIATED EXTENSION, enter .xfdl
In CONTENT TYPE, enter application/vnd.xfdl
Select OK
Exit the properties of the website.
Why is my browser displaying a older version of an electronic form?
Web browsers retain a cache of previously loaded documents. This feature will bring up the copy already in the cache when reloading an electronic form and therefore, display an older version of a recently updated electronic form. You must clear the cache as follows to view the updated version.
Netscape Navigator (version 4.0 or higher) - You must clear both the memory cache and disk cache by:
Open Netscape Navigator
From the Edit menu, select Preferences
From the Category list on the left side of the window, open the Advanced directory and select Cache
To clear the Cache, click both Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache.
To change Netscape's cache settings, select Every Time under Document in Cache is compared to document on network.
Click OK to save the settings.
Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or higher) - You must clear the temporary cache by:
Open Internet Explorer
From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
On the General tab, click Delete Files
Click OK to save the settings.
To change Internet Explorer's cache settings:
Open Internet Explorer
From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
Click Settings and select Every visit to the page
Click OK to save the settings.
Can I change the font in the Form Viewer?
The 6.1 Viewer will allow users to utilize and change the Rich Text Formatting (bolding, underlining, and italicizing) once the electronic forms have been developed using electronic form Designer 2.3, with these functions incorporated into the appropriate fields.
Does Viewer 6.5 have a Drag and Drop feature?
At this time there is no drag and drop feature in Designer or Viewer 6.5.
Why are lines missing when I print an electronic form?
A small number of old printers have trouble when the ratio of printer dots to screen dots is not an integer. To resolve the problem, open the Preferences form, select the Print Option Preferences, and under Miscellaneous Options turn on the Integral printer dot to screen dot ratio option. This causes the Viewer to print the electronic form as large as possible while still maintaining an integral printer dot-to-screen ratio.
Why can I not print just one page of an electronic form?
By default, electronic forms will print all pages (the Print Page Range is "All"). This cannot be changed by the user, but can be set up differently by the electronic form's designer when the electronic form is built.
Why does the text formatting of the electronic form appear different from what is on screen when the electronic form is printed?
Some fonts do not scale well when using the zooming feature available in Viewer 6.0.1. This may result in text appearing cut off in some fields. This problem is most noticeable with very large or very small fields. To ensure proper printing, fill and print all electronic forms while using 100% zoom.
Why I am unable to use the email function within an electronic forms with DMS 3.0 (Defense Message System 3.0)?
The AF DMS Technical Support Center was contacted regarding this issue. The Form Viewer is considered a third party software to DMS and has not been tested with DMS. Users of DMS 3.0 have reported that using the email function within an electronic form requires the user to close and reopen Outlook or using the function may open the commercial version of Outlook. The DTSC confirmed that other applications using a built in email option cause similar problems and provides the following workarounds:
Configure DMS Client to start up as commercial Outlook if you do not routinely send DMS messages.
Log off and back onto DMS Outlook as required when using MS Word and other programs that make the DMS extensions disappear.
Why does the Form Viewer start but then close without opening the electronic form when I select a hyperlink to an electronic form within a cell in an Excel spreadsheet?
To open an electronic form from a hyperlink within a cell in an Excel spreadsheet, you must first open the spreadsheet from within Microsoft Internet Explorer as follows:
Open the spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel
Select View-Toolbars-Web
Select Favorites and then select Add to Favorites...
The File Name should be the name of the file followed by the .url extension and the Save As Type should be Internet Shortcuts(*.url). Select Add.
Close the spreadhseet
Open Microsoft Internet Explorer. Select Favorites and file name added in step 4.
The spreadsheet will open in Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can click on the link to the electronic form and the electronic form will open within the browser.
